Air Field History (includes names of the base commanders)
Kincheloe Air Force Base, Chippewa county, was founded by the U.S. Army
Air Force in 1941 as Kinross Auxiliary Field. In 1947, the Air Force became
a separate branch ofthe services and it became Kinross Air Force Base. In 1959,
it was renamed in honor of Captain Ivan C. Kincheloe, a native of Cassopolis,
Michigan, he was a jet ace in the Korean conflict and later a test pilot for
the X-2 experimental rocket-powered aircraft. He died in July, 1958, in attempting
to eject from a F-104. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. [Richard
