ANDREWS, LORDSON;
Ernest J. H. Andrews married Mildred Hyslop of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. They had two daughters, Frances and Joy, before Mildred passed away. Ernest then married Winifred Champagne and had one son, James. Ernest's mother was Elizabeth (Feltis) Andrews, sister of Walter Feltis.

My Great Great Grandfather John Armstrong brought his family from Ontario to Chippewa Co. in 1885; settled in Dafter, Mi.

John Armstrong, my great grandfather, moved to Dafter in 1885 from Canada. My grandfather, Andrew Armstrong, married Christina CURRIE, daughter of Malcolm Currie, son of Neil Currie. I am interested in any and all ARMSTRONGS and CURRIES of the Dafter and Soo areas in hopes of information.

Jerimiah McSweeney married Nellie Ring, both from Ireland. They had a son named Eugene Owen McSweeney. Eugene, born abt 1832 married Mary Green, born abt 1830. The 1880 census showed they had 9 children, however, only 2 were living at the time of the census. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1877 possibly through NY then Canada. They ended up in Sterlingville Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. The two children still living in 1880 were James and John. James' family kept the Mc on McSweeney. John's descendants dropped the Mc. Both brothers started families of their own and became farmers.

I'd like to do more research in Ireland, however, I am not completely clear on when exactly they left Ireland and from which County. If you have any information on this family, please contact me.

Trying to locate offspring of Daniel Arnott (1850-1922) and Letishia(tish) Bradey (1852-1918). Their daughter Ella Jane Arnott married John Benson and was last head from in 1947. She was born in Sept 1876. The other daughter Ida Bella Arnott, we believe, married a Win? She was born in July 1878 and the last address looks like Tower, Mich. My Grandfather and Greatgrandfather settled in the Barbeau area in the late 1800's coming from Southern Ontario (Penetanguishene Ont). My G. Grandfather's name was John and my Grandfather was William Atkins. William Atkins married Florence Mitten and had 7 children: Cecil, Olive, Lila, Howard, Floyd, Eunice & Eugene (Eugene was my father). BARTLETT, IRVINE, IRWIN, LaBERTIS;
I was hoping that someone could start me on the path to finding my husband's family.

Denis, my husband, knows that his grandmother, Olive Muriel Irvine Bartlett, was born in Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan on November 29, 1901. Her parents are listed as William John Irvine and Matilda LaBertis on her Social Security application. However, on her birth certificate, his grandmother is listed as Mariel Olive Irwin born to William Irwin of Michigan and Metalla Irwin of Canada. My husband was told that his grandmother was 1/2 Potawatomi, however we do not know if she was registered to any tribe or not.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that you could lend me in our quest to find his ancestors, or at least point me in the right direction. Thanks!

I am looking for Joseph Bastien who lived in Mackinac around 1828? (1808) the document is difficult to read. he would be my ggg grandfathers fathers father. He migrated from Canada to Mackinac to Minnesota where he became a citizen. I am looking for any Censes, marrage, anything at all.

Bastien is sometimes spelled Bastian. It is also a DIT.. I have found it on many baptisms and marrage documents in my family it can be spelled several ways depending on the person. the usual way is Bastien dit Villiotte

I have been told the Benoit family is from the Chippewa County area, coming from Canada.

We show Jean Baptiste Benoit married Rosalie Cousineau. Their son is Maxime.

Maxime Benoit married Delima Perron. They had children but we have only these names: Leeda (Edith), Melina, and Georgana (?). Edith and Melina married Morin brothers, Alex(ander?) and Frederick.

BLAKELY, CAMPBELL, SMITH;
I am searching for a family of Smiths that moved from Grey County, in Ontario, Canada and went to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan sometime in the late 1800's. The head of the Smith family was Robert Blakely Smith the eldest son of a family of ten children who was born about 1848 in Madoc, Ontario. His second name Blakely was his mother's maiden name. His father was Robert Smith and his mother was Elizabeth Sarah Blakely who also were originally from Madoc in the county of Hastings. His parent�s (Robert Smith and Elizabeth Sarah Blakely) farm was along the Old Mail Road about 1.5 miles from Griersville. The Old Mail Road went from Griersville in St. Vincent Township to Heathcote in Euphrasia township in Grey County. Robert Blakely Smith�s father�s father and mother (his grandparents ) were Joseph and Margaret Smith who lived in Euphrasia township in Grey County (Lot 30 Concession 3) had lived near Madoc Ontario in Hastings County before moving to Euphrasia Township in Grey County. Their farm was at Lot 30 Concession 3 about 2 miles along the Old Mail in Euphrasia township.

I have been in contact with descendants from 9 of the ten children except for Robert Blakely Smith's family who left the area of Grey County about 1885 to 1890 and went to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. None of these families kept in touch with this family that left for Sault Ste. Marie and I have no idea where his descendants are now or ended up.

Robert Blakely Smith was married about 1880 to Sarah Ann Campbell from Euphrasia Township, Grey County, in Ontario Canada. She was the daughter of John Campbell. Their first child was named Robert John James Smith who was born April 9th, 1883 in Euphrasia Township, in the county of Grey and his birth was registered July 14, 1883.

My grandmother told me she thought that this family had left the area and gone to Sault Ste. Marie and thought they had four sons. Well to my surprise she could not have been more right about where this family had moved to except I was thinking of Sault Ste. Marie in Canada not in United States. I hadn't given it a thought that it was United States. As you see she was right on when it came to where they had moved too. She may be right about the four sons too. I don't know. Surprisingly this was about her husband's family and not her own. She was very sharp in memory well into her nineties and must have a keen interest in her husband�s family as much as she did in her own for to have known and retained this information.

This fact was confirmed when I recently reviewed some land registry documents which I had in my possession for many years ( twenty some years I think ) and realized the wealth of information that was in them. They confirmed that documents that I had in regards to a land registry transaction were served upon this family and other family members in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The documents show that they were served on a Robert B. Smith, a John Campbell, ( who I believe is his father_in_law ), a James B Campbell ( I believe a brother to his wife Sarah Ann Campbell and therefore his brother-in-law ), and a Mary Smith ( who I believe was Robert Blakely Smith�s aunt ). I had been trying to locate this aunt of his in Grey County and wondered why I could not find there. It now became evident she too must have left the area with her nephew�s family.

The documents states:

In the Matter of certain proceedings under power of sale and in the matter of the north half of Lot No. 30 in the third concession of the township Euphrasia in the county of Grey.

I John F. Tumble(?) of the town of Sault St. Marie, in the District of Algoma, Barrister_at_law. do solemnly declare that I did on the 15th day of October 1890 personally serve Robert B. Smith, Mary Smith wife the said Robert B. Smith (this would not be his wife but his aunt I believe) and John Campbell named in the notice of sale Exhibit "A" each with a line (?) copy of the notice of Exercising Power of Sale ????? ????? and marked Exhibit "A" by delivering such copies to and leaving the same with them the said Robert B Smith, Mary Smith and John Campbell at the town of Sault Ste. Marie in the state of Michigan and that I did also at the same time personally serve James B Campbell named in the Power of Sale Exhibit "A" with a line (?) copy of the said notice of Exercising Power of Sale before (?) accused (?) by delivery such copy to and leaving the same with John Campbell the father of the said James B. Campbell at the usual residence or place of abode of him the said James B Campbell at the town of Sault Ste. Marie in the state of Michigan.

And I make this solemn Declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the Act respecting extra_judicial oaths. Declared before me the town of ? in the District of ? this 16th day of October A.D. 1890.

This is all the information that I know about this family. I am hoping to hear from someone about this long lost family that emigrated to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan sometime in the late 1800s ( about 1885 to 1890 ) from where the trail grows cold and I don't have clue were to start searching.

BOIVERT (or LAROSE);
Frank (Francis, Francois) LAROSE Frank (" , ") BOIVERT. He went by both names. Was born in Saulte Ste. Marie, CAN and in 1877? killed a man on Lake Superior by breaking a whiskey bottle over his head. Trying to find his parents or maybe a newspaper article about this incident. He was tried, convicted and escaped...don't know from where. Thanks!!

James Burke (born abt 1856) married Florence Bonneau (born abt 1856) and had 6 children. The children are Helen, Catherine, Mary , Florence, James Jr. and Oliver. They lived in Sault St. Marie and they were Catholic. James and Florence died in 1895.

Maria (Wall) Bottrell lived briefly with her son Samuel Amos Bottrell & his family in Sault Ste. Marie around 1897. She died in Sault Ste. Marie in 1900. Her husband was James Bottrell of Bentinck Township, Ontario. Her father was Moses Wall who arrived in Quebec in 1819 from County Tipperary, married Anne Merrett and eventually settled in Hanover, Ontario.

Jason Merton Carpenter (b. 10-14-1886 d. 4-8-1935) md. Agnes Mary Rogers (b. 4-24-1891 Black River, Mackinac Co.,Garfield Twsp, MI d. 12-24-1970 Trout Lake, MI) on 12-7-1911.

Jason Carpenter was one of the first employees at Wilwin. He worked on the R.R. grade during the summer of 1915, then helped in the construction of the mill. That finished, he operated the locomotive, �Little old 100� for some time; later, he was night watchman, and later still, engineer in charge of all operating mill machinery. After the mill was shut down, he remained at Wilwin as general watchman and upkeep man for all idle machinery; he also had charge of the crew who tore the mill down and shipped out the machinery and railroad equipment in 1927. From 1928 until his death in 1935, Jason was caretaker and kept the Lodge and other buildings in good condition for summer vacations and fall hunting parties.

My grandmother was BRIDGET FRANCES MCCARTHY; b. 1892, Alliston, Ontario, Canada; d. 1958, Sault Ste. Marie. Her parents: SUSANNAH COX; b. 1850, Ontario, Canada; d. Chippewa Co., 1915) and JOHN MCCARTHY; b. 1847, Albany, NY; d. 1910, Chippewa Co. John's parents: ELLEN LANGLEY (b. 1811/1813 ?, Ireland) and JOHN MCCARTHY (b. 1817?, Ireland). We believe the McCarthy's were from County Cork in Ireland. The MCCARTHY name was changed to CARTY temporarily.

Margaret Helen Causley married Russell Willette.
Russell died before 1920. Margaret is listed as living with her sister Harriet Chinnault, who was married to Daniel. The two sisters were born in Blind River, Ontario and lived and died unknown except Margaret, and she is said to be buried in Riverside abt. 1960. Anyone with information, please contact me.

I am interested in someone helping me find ancestors in the Sault Ste Marie area. I am looking for Harvey Clark who was married to Mary Paquin. I find them in the 1900 census in the county of Mackinac, city of Saint Ignace. I am looking for all records of this family. Mary Paquin was born according to the census, April 1865. Harvey Clark was born September of 1849. Their daughter who was Marion Clark was my grandmother. She married Clyde Garrison and lived in Sault Ste Marie according to her marriage license. I am interested in someone helping me find ancestors in the Sault Ste Marie area. I am looking for Harvey Clark who was married to Mary Paquin. I find them in the 1900 census in the county of Mackinac, city of Saint Ignace. I am looking for all records of this family. Mary Paquin was born according to the census, April 1865. Harvey Clark was born September of 1849. Their daughter who was Marion Clark was my grandmother. She married Clyde Garrison and lived in Sault Ste Marie according to her marriage license. HOWLETT; Bernard Howlett
My paternal grandfather, Frederick Robert James Howlett, was born in 1892 in Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co., Michigan. His father was William Howlett. I have found four Land Records for William Howlett from 1879 to 1884. These may include both William and HIS father, also William. Frederick had a twin sister Beatrice.

They are in the 1900 Federal census and I have seen them also listed in the 1894 Michigan State census although I have lost my copy of that record and have not been able to find it again. It had been given to me by a friend who has since died.

Married Frances Letitia MILLIGAN (b Aug 1867 in Canada) and had three sons: Thomas E., born March 1883 in Michigan; Joseph S., born March 1883 place unknown; and Robert Whiteside Jr., born Sault Ste Marie Oct 1892. Robert Sr. died before 1914. All three sons went to Panama to work on the locks between 1910-1914.

I am looking for marriage license of Anna Zeigler (Ziegler) to Napoleon LaFountain in November 1893 in DeTour Village, Chippewa County, Michigan. The application is at the Chippewa County court house in Sault Ste Marie, but no license. I have written to Lansing but none found. They would have been married in the Catholic Church in De Tour.

Anna, my GGrandmother, was the priest's housekeeper until her marriage to Napoleon, my GGrandfather, a lumberman. They had 4 of their children in Onaway. First born was stillborn. Then Joseph, born 1896; my grandmother Susanna, 1897; and Celia, 1898 or 1899. I also would like to find an address in Onaway where they lived.

John (Johan) Lintala left Finland in 1899 with his mother. The family (minus John) is recorded in the 1920 census for Kinross. A newspaper clipping from 2 May 1905 states the following:

2 May 1905, Tuesday
Miss Maggie Waltz, accompanied by a large party of Finnish people from all over the copper country, left yesterday morning for Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, and [from] there will go to Drummond Island, where they expect to start a Finnish colony, should the place prove suitable. The party will stake out claims of 160 acres each, and will return there in 6 months to take up residence permanently.

Matt Lintala, Sr. came alone to the US in 1886. Lisa Lintala came to Sault Ste Marie (MI) with John in 1899 and to the US via New York with Matt, Jr. in 1900. Matt Sr., Lisa and John are believed to have come to Kinross or Sault Ste Marie via Montreal or Quebec. The entire family moved to New York between 1917-1927, first Matt Lintala Sr., then Matt Jr. Variations of the surname vary but include the following: Lintal, Lintala, Lindala, and Lindale.

I am looking primarily for information on John (b. 5 Dec 1885 Finland) Lintala, since I already have information on other members of this family. I believe he may have died in Kinross before the family relocated to New York. A daughter of Matt Jr (Lintala, Baby) is buried in the Lakeside Cemetery in Kinross. In the 1920 Census, Matt Jr. (as Matt Lindale) is listed in Kinross while Matt Sr. (as Matt Lintal) is residing in Newfield, Tompkins County, New York.

If someone can do lookups on the Lintala family for me in Kinross or at the County Clerk's office, I will do reciprocal lookups on their family in the 1920 and 1930 census. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Lewis Lordson married Matilda Steele in approximately 1892 when they purchased their farm in Pickford, MI from the Feltis family. They had a son named Alfred and a daughter named Mae. Alfred married Agnes Hill, and they had four children: Raymond, Mae, Norman, and Francis. Raymond died quite young. Mae married Clifford Anderson, having one son and two daughters. Norman died in 1968 leaving two daughters. Francis married Joy Andrews, having one daughter (myself).

My greatgrandfather, William MILNE's, sister, Margaret, married George McKEE in Ontario in the 1850's. They eventually moved to Michigan and are buried in Kinross Cemetery. Three of William and Margaret's brothers also moved to Michigan probably in the late 1800s. I am trying to trace them and family stories indicate that at least one of them went to Sault Ste Marie. There names are : George, Robert and James.

The M�n�clier family that went to Sault Ste-Marie was a M�tis family of French Canadian and Ojibwe blood. They left Qu�bec for Michigan between 1820 and 1830. Some were still there in 1900 (Miniclier was the preferred spelling in America).
