WHAT'S NEW

22 June 2008;
~ Added multiple new obituaries submitted by gmglory and nnjer.
~ Uploaded a new set of corrections/additions to the Drummond Island Burial Records submitted by Michelle Stone and Judy Melvin. Keep it coming, ladies!

4 June 2008;
~ Uploaded corrections/additions to the Drummond Island Burial Records submitted by Michelle Stone and Judy Melvin. Thanks for the update, ladies!

5 May 2008;
~ Uploaded an update to the Drummond Island Burial Records compiled by Judy Melvin and transcribed by Michelle Stone. Thanks for all your hard work, ladies!
~ Updated the contact e-mail for the material donated by Michelle Stone.

29 April 2008;
~ Added "McCarron Family History" to the Biographies page and the Township History page. Thanks, Linda!
~ Added two new links to the Military page: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion and The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Both of these titles are hosted by Cornell University.

27 April 2008;
~ All of the issues with Stanley Newton's "Story of Sault Ste. Marie and Chippewa County" have been fixed. All the links should now be working correctly.

24 April 2008;
~ Added 2 new entries to the marriages page and 13 obits to the obituaries page, all courtesy of gmglory. Whew! I think it's a new record for submissions from a single researcher using one e-mail message. Anyone want to try to top her record?

23 April 2008;
~ An alert reader pointed out some issues with the links on the Stanley Newton "Story of Sault Ste. Marie and Chippewa County." I think I've fixed the issue in the 20th Century section of this page but there are still some broken anchor links in the 18th Century section. These links should still take you to the top of the right page, just not the individual section that it's supposed to. I will do my best to get this fixed by Friday.
~ I hadn't heard from FreeFind by last Friday, so this weekend I signed up with PicoSearch for a free search engine for the site. It seems to be returning relevant hits. If anyone runs into issues while trying to use it, let me know.

16 April 2008;
~ All the remaining pages have been checked for broken links updated, removed, or changed to a suitable replacement. To my knowledge, all links on the site should now be working. All links to sites moved to the new address at MIGenWeb.net should now be updated.
~ I'm still having trouble getting help from FreeFind about the site search engine, and the Google search is indexing the site so slowly that's it's not much help. I'm going to try contacting FreeFind again. If the problem hasn't been resolved by Friday morning, I will look for a new search engine for the site.

15 April 2008;
~ Updated links on the following pages: Land Records, Military, Indian History & Records, Vital Records, Personal Homepages.
~ Added a link to the Michigan Family Group Sheet Project to the home page.
~ Completely re-did the Immigrations/Migrations page.

14 April 2008;
~ Updated all links on the Cemeteries page.
~ Added new links to the Cemeteries page for Trout Lake Township (Lakeview Cemetery) and Soo Township (Neebish Island Catholic, Neebish Island Presbyterian, Trombly Family, and Maple Ridge cemeteries). All these links are from the Chippewa County Genealogical Society home page.

8 April 2008;
~ Updated links on the Canadian pages.
~Updated links in the Archives section.
~ Updated links in the Our Neighbors section.
~ Replaced some corrupt files in the Historical Data section and updated outside links.
~ Added a new obituary on Horace Seymour to the newspaper obituaries page.

2 April 2008;
~ Moved the site from Rootsweb to MIgenWeb.net.
~ Many broken links repaired, updated or removed if a current site address could not be found. If your site has been removed in error, or if you want to submit an updated url, please e-mail the coordinator.
~ The Local History and Genealogy site for the Bayliss Public Library looks like it has finally stabilized, so links to this site should be working now.

19 May 2007;
~
I know the last entry makes it look as though I haven't been doing anything on the site...I really have been updating! I've just been a total slacker about the What's New page.
~ I've removed the link to the old Guest Book. It was started by the previous administrator way back when. I don't have the username and password necessary to edit it, and it looks as though it's being spammed so I think it's best to just get rid of it for now. I'll look into ways and means of adding a similar feature down the road.
~ I've updated both the FAQ and the Look Ups pages.
~ The Surname Registry hasn't been buzzing, but there are a few new entries. Check it out!
~ The Baylisslib.org site made a brief reappearance but it now looks as though it's down permanently. What a shame. I'll be removing all links to the Bayliss Public Library's Local Histoy Network by the end of the month. If you're surfing this site in June and notice a link I missed, be sure to drop me a line with the url of the page it's on.
~ Added some links to MDOT pages on historic bridges and canals in the Soo to the Chippewa County history page.
~ On a total side note, I recently upgraded my internet service from dial-up to DSL and what a difference it makes! It's a lovely feeling to be able to update the pages on the fly. Wa-hooo!!!

11 June 2005;
~ Added more entries to the Surnames Page.

3 April 2005;
~ Added two new entries to the Surname Registry page.
~ Removed an entry on the Lookups page because the volunteer's e-mail is bouncing, and I have been unable to locate her.

27 March 2005;
~ More additions/updates to the Surname Registry.

27 February 2005;
~ Took an infinitely long time to add a few new Surname Registries, but they are now up.
~ Updated the 1883 Pensioners List with two new names. Thanks, Bill!

January 30, 2005;
~
Took down Stanley Newton's "The Story of Sault Ste. Marie and Chippewa County" due to serious probelms with file names. This is another problem dating from the time I was using an ftp program to upload files which began automatically to shorten file names. Due to the multiple problems with this set of pages and the length of time it will take to correct it, I've decided to take the whole section down until I have time to fix it. For those who need access to the book, you should be able to get it through interlibrary loan at your local public library.
~ Updated the Surname Index, McSweeney Family Photos page, and the primary Photos page.
~ The Chippewa County Genealogical Society has lost a number of their researchers lately (they're still alive, they're just busy with projects!), so please be patient if it takes a while to hear back from them. They're working as fast as they can!
~ I've completed by move across town, but much of my stuff is still in boxes which I'm trying to find time to unpack. So it may take me a bit longer to get updates done. I promise I'll get to things as soon as I can.

December 27, 2004;
~ Corrected an error in Marilyn O'Leary's e-mail address on the Surnames Page. Sorry, Marilyn!!
~ Have finished updating the Birth Record Index Page - all 16 pages - new entries added (Thanks, Barbara!), and all entries reformatted to alphabetical-by-surname format. Also added entries on this page for information in the birth announcements found in local papers. All the previous birth record pages (3 pages at last count) have been merged into this one location.
~ I should be uploading these pages within the next few days. After that, there won't be any new updates until about mid-January so I can focus on my move across town in early January. Thankfully, the weather forecasts look good - upper 50s and low 60s - so I shouldn't have to deal with any ice during my move. <sigh> Nashville just can't seem to deal with ice and snow like the Yoopers do! {:-)

December 12, 2004;
~ I've started a page for recording Chippewa County naturalizations. The first submissions are from Babrbara Halloran. Thanks, Barbara!
~ I'm going to be changing the Birth Record/Index page to reflect an alphabetical listing for birth record information, as opposed to the current listing by city. The transcriber/submitter's name will be listed individually next to the record they submitted. Many thanks to Ronnie Aungst and Barbara Halloran for the records they've submitted! I should have these new pages up by the beginning of January.

November 21, 2004;
~ I've done updates since August, so it's not as bad as it looks! I just haven't managed to get the "What's New" page updated yet!
~ I think it's safe to assume that the Bayliss server has gone to the great WWW in the sky...at least, still no word yet on when to expect it to surface. I've suggested they remove the link from their home page, but no action yet. In the meantime, Esther Thompson - web mistress extraordinaire! - has managed to get most of the cemetery transcriptions posted that I sent her. I have changed all the urls for those she's posted. For those remaining, I have removed the active link (since the Bayliss server is down anyway) and placed a "coming soon!" note next to it. As soon as we finish reformatting these, we'll get them up for everyone. So please be patient!
~ On a related note, Donna White - our cemetery transcriptios guru - has requested that researchers NOT e-mail her with reference requests. She's been inundated with requests for research help since the transcriptions were posted, and she simply does not have the time to help everyone. So please -- unless you need permission to publish portions of her transcriptions or have a specific question on how she did the transcription (not where you can get more information!), do not send your questions to Donna. Instead, check the Addresses & Information page for other research resources. Thanks!

August 29, 2004;
~ The Baylisslib.org site is still down. I've learned from other researchers that apparently the server has crashed completely and needs to be replaced. Since there's no money to buy a completely new server, they are apparently looking at other options. In the meantime, Donna White, who has transcribed most of the cemeteries in Chippewa County, has granted permission for the transcriptions residing on the Bayliss site to also be added to the Chippewa County Genealogical Society site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~michcgs/. I am currently working with Esther Thompson, the CCGS web mistress, on getting the transcriptions up. Once she has them posted on the CCGS site, I will change the urls on this site to the new location. Until then, if you need access to a transcript which is currently unavailable, contact either Esther or myself and we'll try to send you the file. Meanwhile, life goes on.....
~ Updated the Surname Registry.

August 8, 2004;
~ Bayliss Public Library's Baylisslib.org site for local history and genealogy is down again. Possibly due to maintenance. I have a call in to try to find out what the problem is, but I'm still waiting on an answer. Until further notice, this site should be considered offline. This will affect a fair number of the cemetery transcriptions by Donna White and some of the local history articles.
~ Added a new photograph to the Family Photos page. Thanks, Holly!
~ Corrected the web address for Suomi College - now called Finlandia University - on the Addresses page.

July 5, 2004;
~ Updated The Story of Wilwin with new informatin about the author.

June 21, 2004;
~ Added new entries to the Surnames Registry.
~ Updated the Undated Census to include some information about a potential date range.
~ Corrected the following filenames which had been corrupted (see April 25, 2004 entry): Site Inpections, Burial Index, Neebish Island Map, Neebish Island Presbyterian Cemetery partial transcription.
~ Added a new site to the Chippewa County Home Pages.

May 9, 2004;
~ Updated the Surnames Registry with a revised entry.
~ Updated the Marriages and Obituaries from local newspapers with some new entries.

April 25, 2004;
~ Updated the Surnames Registry page to include a revised entry.
~ Found some filename errors dating from when I was still using WSFTP which tended to cut long filenames off. I've started to review all the pages for the site to look for errors, but there are currently about 200 pages so it'll take a while!

April 18, 2004;
~ Updated the Schools page to include identification of people in Class of 1928, Sterlingville School. Thanks, Aaron!
~ Updated Surname Registry with new entries.

March 20, 2004;
~Updated the family photos page with yet more submissions. Hooray!!
~ Fixed the problems on the other family photos pages that I missed before I uploaded. <sigh>

March 15, 2004;
~ Updated the Surname Registry page with new entries.
~ Since I've received new family photo submissions, I will be changing the Family Photos page to an index page for these types of items. Each surname which gets submitted will get its own page, which will be linked from the Family Photos page. Should have this finished by the end of the week.
~ Fixed a problem with the mailto link for one of the Surname entries (Sorry, Sharon!). Should be working okay after I upload the updated page.
~ Happy "Everything You Think is Wrong" Day <today>, Happy "Everything You Do Is Right" Day <tomorrow>, and Happy St. Patrick's Day <Wednesday>!

February 1, 2004;
~ I know the gap between this entry and the next entry makes things look bad as far as updates go, but I really have been doing updates. I just keep forgetting to update the What's New page. <sigh>
~ Recent updates include Surname Registry, Obits, and Churches pages.
~ Due to the horrific proliferation of e-mail viruses, if an e-mail message subject line looks suspicious (i.e. lots of non-alpha characters, etc) or if there's no subject line at all, then I will be deleting the message without opening it. So be sure you include a subject line in your message when you write!
~ I'm working on a new site design which will include less link material on the home page (i.e. less scrolling) and more navigation options from other pages within the site. It's still under development, so don't be surprised if it takes a while yet.
~ Oh, and Happy National Kazoo Day <Thursday, Jan 29, 2004> to all you kazoo players out there.

March 8, 2003;
~ Updated the surname page with lots of new entries.
~ Due to the volume of e-mail I've been receiving from researchers asking for research help, I've had to add a note to the home page asking researchers to use the lookup volunteers or to contact libraries in the area of their research rather than sending their question to me. While I don't want to discourage people from contacting me, I was getting so many questions that I was losing time I would normally spend on preparing new pages or doing updates. I don't mind answering a question about where to go for resources, but please check the web site for those sources first. Thanks.

January 17, 2003;
~ Happy Belated New Year!!
~ Recovering from minor foot surgery and the flu (again), so things have been interesting.
~ Am getting ready to move to a new apartment so updates will be slowing down for a little bit. Current round of updates include: Dibean Marriage Index, new Soo township census c1840's, Surname Registry, and updated links on the Bio and Chippewa History pages.
~ Am still plugging away at the 1930 Federal Census of Chippewa County, but it's very slow going so please be patient.
~ Have also received some photo submissions from Kathy Wykes, which I will post as soon as I'm able.

December 24, 2002;
~ Well, the flu bug has hit, so I'm stuck at home instead of going to visit the family for Christmas. The good news is, it's given me time to do lots of updates.
~ Switched from using WS_FTP LE because I was having trouble uploading files with the 16 bit version of this program. The program would shorten any file name longer than 8 letters, which totally messed up internal links throughout the site. Have now started using FTP Explorer by Alan Chavis (FTPx.com) and am now a happy webmaster. Very easy to use, great drag and drop features, and no scrambling to rename files after uploading. I totally recommend this program if you're shopping for a new FTP application. You can download a copy of this program at C|Net <http://www.download.com>.
~ Updated some information of the Howletts in the Maple Ridge Cemetery (Soo) transcription, thanks to researcher Ruth Peterson. Thanks, Ruth!
~ Updated the Photographs page, thanks to some more submissions from Christine Kinnear. Thanks, Chris!
~ Added a new Family Photographs section to the Photographs page, thanks to some photos of the Raeburn family sent by researcher Holly Spencer. Thanks, Holly!
~ Added a photo of the 1930 Class of Trout Lake High School to the Schools page, thanks to researcher Doreen Kleeman. Thanks, Doreen!

December 21, 2002;
~ Updated the Obituaries page with a new obit of John D. "Jack" McPherson submitted by Beverly Knolls. Thanks for submitting, Beverly!
~ Updated the Schools page with three new categories - Class Pictures, Graduation Programs, and Photographs of School Buildings - all due to the thoughtful photo donations of Christine Kinnear. Thanks for donating, Chris!!
~ Updated the Chippewa Co. Online Books & Articles page with a new submission on Wilwin by Anita Gauld. Even though Wilwin is located in Mackinac County, the article mentions Sault Ste Marie and Emerson and provides a fascinating look at logging in the Upper Peninsula. Thanks for submitting, Anita!

November 16, 2002;
~ I started the transcription of the 1930 Census, which is quite lengthy. Because of the length of the project, rather than wait months to finish a major chunk of transcription before posting anything, I have decided to begin the project by posting name indexes for the townships as I go. That way there's some useful data out there while I work on the rest of the transcription. I'm transcribing into an Excel spreadsheet, then copying and pasting files for the index once I finish the names. Then I sort alphabetically in Excel, then export the index into Dreamweaver for conversion into html. Once an index is posted, I'll go back to the census and finish transcribing the rest of the info for the township. I just finished the Bay Mills index and will now look at finishing the Bay Mills transcription.
~ Still working also on converting the WW I veterans database. Stay tuned for updates to those pages.
~ Also working on getting the images which were donated ready to join the current photos page. Will post these as soon as I'm able.

November 11, 2002;
~Slowly trying to continue new updates. Slowed down significantly by family issues arising from the death of my father, Johnny Gray, in late October. Will now try to get back into my Michigan research.
~ In an effort to increase the census coverage of the site, I will be starting a transcription of the 1930 Chippewa County census. After this has been completed and posted, I will try to work my way back to the 1850 census since work has already been done on 1830 and 1840 by other volunteers.
~ I have begun receiving donations of transcriptions and scanned images from a number of volunteers. I will add their names to this chronicle once I have their donations posted to the site.

July 14, 2002;
~Started new Shipwrecks page for information on shipwrecks occuring on Lake Superior. This page will also include any death notices or obituaries of people who died during a shipwreck. Obituaries of people killed in shipboard accidents - in which the ship itself did not run aground or sink - will be included on the obituaries page.
~ Started new Ships and Shipping News page for information about ships or Lake Superior shipping which did not result in a wreck. News associated with captains of Lake Superior vessels will be included here as well.
~ Updated the Chippewa County History page by moving the township history table to its own page.
~ Updated the Township History page with information on other townships in Chippewa County (names G-Z). Removed many of the listings of residents from these entries since I felt that it might be a violation of copyright for the sources listed. Listings now include basic information about the townships' founding and history. I will update this page as I run across more information on the townships.

July 7, 2002;
~ Added 15 new images to the site. Updated the old "Album.htm" page and changed the name to "Photographs.htm." Placed all the Chippewa GenWeb hosted images in a table and setup thumbnails for each. Deleted dead links in the "Other Chippewa County Photos" section. Updated the Index page to reflect new page name and location.

June 30, 2002;
~
Updated Surname Registry, Dibean Marriage Index, and fixed broken link on main page under Photographs.
~ Started new project of transcribing birth, marriage, and death announcements from early Michigan newspapers for Chippewa County Michigan. Finished first microfilm roll of Lake Superior and Mining News and Lake Superior Journal for c1847-1854. Links to these transcriptions are provided on the Birth, Marriages, and Death records pages.
~ Started digitizing photos from old postcards that I have recently purchased. I should be able to launch a new photographs page by the middle of July. If you have personal photographs of families, businesses, or townships of Chippewa COunty that you'd like to see posted on these pages, please let me know.

June 4, 2002;
~ Esther Thompson, webmaster for the Chippewa County Genealogical Society, pointed out to me yesterday that all the Bayliss Public Library cemetery transcription links were bad because the urls had changed. Unfortunately, I had to take responsibility for this snafu since I was the webmaster for the Bayliss site when the links changed. I was preparing for my move to Nashville and had frantically changed many of the old urls when I changed the folder organization of the site to make it easier to maintain. I totally forgot that both Esther and myself (as webmaster for the Chippewa GenWeb page) both linked to these items. My humble, humble apologies to anyone inconvenienced by this problem. All the cemetery links should now be working properly. Please let me know if you encounter a problem.

May 27, 2002;
~ Have finished reformatting the Maple Ridge Cemetery database, compiled by Gail Pratt and Marjorie Cooper. Gail and Marjorie transcribed the Maple Ridge Cemetery sexton's book and entered the data into Access 2000. The resulting tables, once converted to HTML for the web, were too long to print properly from a browser so I retyped the data into a web template I developed so it would be easier to print the records. This project contains over 700 burial records for this cemetery, located on Ashmun Street in Sault Ste Marie. Thanks, Gail and Marjorie!
~ Have added a new tombstone reading for the Drummond Island Cemetery by Michelle Stone. Thanks, Michelle!
~ I've had difficulty setting up the old boards since Ancestry merged the Rootsweb boards with their own. The Queries board is functional, but I was looking at having to set up new boards for obits, marriages, etc. Rather than doing this, I've decided to start new web pages for vital records where I can post entries, much in the same way the Surname Registry page is set up. All entries will be alphabetical by surname. The first one to be posted will be the Obituaries page, which should be ready to go live by the end of this week.
~ With the posting of the new Maple Ridge pages, I have begun to experiment with a server-side include file as a footer for each of the pages on Chippewa County GenWeb. This will make updating the bottom of page links easier since I'll only have to change one file instead of fifty+. Eventually, all the pages on the site will go to this format.
~ I've started to convert another database Gail and Marjorie developed, Chippewa County Soldiers and Sailors of the Great War (WW I). Records for this database are taken from a two-volume set of the same name located in the Steere Room of Bayliss Public Library. Data for this set was collected (I believe) by the Chippewa County Clerk when WW I veterans were contacted to encourage them to apply for benefits. Many of the records - over 1,100 of them - contain only the name of the person and some basic info. Others include info on parents' names, regiment and company, and date of discharge. Serve record data was not included in the database, since formatting it was rather problematical. I'll include more information about this database when the pages go live. Due to the size of this project, I'll probably go ahead and post surname pages as I complete them, rather than wait until all the pages are completed.

April 17, 2002;
~The "Bayliss Public Library Local History and Genealogy Community Information Network" is now back online. All the pages seemed to be working as of 10am this morning. I will start to restore the links I removed last week.

April 13, 2002;
~ Updated the Surname Registry page to reflect some submissions sent to my old e-mail address.
~ Have received permission from our cemetery transcriber, Donna White, to post all her Chippewa County cemetery transcriptions to both Chippewa County GenWeb and the Chippewa County Genealogical Society's (CCGS) home page. Esther Thompson, webmaster for CCGS, and I will be working together to prep these transcriptions for the web. Thank you, Donna!
~ Due to the continued problems with the Bayliss Public Library's local history web site, I have started to remove some of the links to their site. Links on the Chippewa County Online Books page have been removed. I have also removed the link to their site from the Chippewa GenWeb home page. If BPL is successful in relaunching the site, I will replace the links.

April 5, 2002;
~
Have been catching up on maintenance things: updating surname entries on the Surname Registry page and changing over the coordinator e-mail address to chippewagen@yahoo.com.
~Since I left Bayliss Public Library, the new systems administrator has been restructuring BPL's two servers, including the server which houses the Local History and Genealogy Network I set up before I left. The site has been down now for several weeks, and I am uncertain how soon the site will be back up again. In the meantime, the many cemetery transcriptions and local history articles linked to this site from Chippewa County GenWeb are currently unavailable. Any link which starts "http://www.baylisslib.org" may not work until further notice. I will be contacting Donna White, the person who compiled the cemetery transcriptions on that site, to see if I can get permission to cross post them until the BPL site is back up. If the BPL site isn't back up by the end of April, I will begin removing the links to this site.

January 30, 2002:
~Wow...has really been a long time since I've had time to work on the site. Will try to do better.
~Due to e-mail requests which have not identified as Chippewa County oriented, I have set up a separate account at Yahoo to serve as a contact e-mail for the Chippewa County Coordinator. Address is chippewagen@yahoo.com.
~Changed jobs, including city and state. Moved from reference librarian at Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste Marie, MI to public services archivist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Kind of separates me from primary resources ('tho I hope to make use of other local library resources) but should free up some time to work on the web site. Let's hope for the best.
~Started to remove much of the smaller font text on the pages to make them easier to read (for my own aging eyes, if nothing else).
~Removed reference to Geocities page on main page in preparation of taking Geocities mirror page down by end of February 2002.
