Hi, my name is Dannielle Thomas and I am the coordinator for the Emmet County, Michigan, USGenWeb pages. I was born and raised in Emmet County, and find it to be a very beautiful area. As I work to bring you as much historical and genealogical information about this county and its people, if there is something you would like to see on this website please email me and let me know.
I no longer live in Emmet County, and am unable to do look ups. Please see the look up page of people who have volunteered to do specific lookups.
The county was formed April 1, 1840 from Mackinaw County. It was first named Tonedagana County and renamed Emmet County on March 8, 1843. Emmet County remained attached to Mackinac County for administrative purposes until county government was organized in 1853. The county was named for the Irish patriot Robert Emmet, who was hanged as a traitor to the British government at the age of 23. Sixteen counties were renamed in 1843 and five were given names of Irish origin, supposedly in deference to the increasing presence of settlers in Michigan with an Irish background.
The pages represented on this entire website may be freely linked to but not copied, under any circumstances, without my express permission.
Surrounding counties include: Cheboygan County on the east side, Charlevoix County on the southwest side, and directly west is Lake Michigan.
When using the search engine, it is suggested you search by last name, I have tried to include maiden names of females listed on the site, as well as married name or names.
