Michael J. O’Meara

1841-1919

Michael O’Meara was born in Ireland the oldest son. He was reared on a farm until the age of 16 when he enlisted in the British Fusileers. At the end of two years, the regiment was transferred to Canada where he finished his enlistment. He then traveled to New Jersey and engaged in agriculture 8 months.

He spent a short time in Chicago, going thence to Grand Rapids. After 2 years he moved to Byron Center where he purchased a residence on Hanover Street valued at $700. In 1869 he was married to Florence, daughter of Amaziah and Elizabeth Wedgewood, a native of Maine.

Their three children are: Forrest, Agnes, and Edward.

Mr. O’Mears is a Democrat and a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is now acting as township clerk to which office he was chosen at the last election.

He was 77 years old when he died. His wife, Florence, was also 77. They are buried in Boynton Cemetery.
