SOUTH OF THE BORDER IN OHIO

If you can't find your ancestor in any of the above cemeteries and they lived in the southern portion of Lenawee County, check in Ohio.
Remember there is a six-mile tract of land that was once considered part of Michigan but became part of Ohio after the Michigan/Ohio
dispute. Congress settled the dispute and gave that six-mile area to the state of Ohio. These are some of the cemeteries within that
strip of land that may contain Lenawee County residence.

Other Cemetery Information Sources

  • Michigan Cemetery Atlas - Over 3800 Michigan Burial Sites
Published in 1991 by the Library of Michigan
This book has Locations of each county with a list of the burial sites for that county with cemetery marked on the Location. 112 burial sites are listed for Lenawee County; many sites are no longer cemeteries. The numbers that follow the cemetery names are the numbers used in the Cemetery Atlas to locate cemeteries on the Location.

  • Michigan Cemetery Source Book - Companion Volume to the Michigan Cemetery Atlas
Published in 1994 by the Library of Michigan
This book lists each burial site by township within a county. In addition, it lists any published tombstone readings that have been done for the burial site giving the year the cemetery was read and if the source is a book or microfilm. The tombstone readings documents are at the Library of Michigan. This book also notes the locations of the burial sites. Many of the burial sites listed in this book are no longer cemeteries and are on private property. They may no longer be accessible.

  • The Michigan USGenWeb Genealogy Home Page has a link to a very large list of cemeteries in Michigan. However, when checked this list contained only three of Lenawee County's cemeteries.

  • Gravestone Records of Lenawee County, Michigan, Vol 1-5 by Harriet Cole Bowen
This series can be found at The Library of Michigan- book: F572.L5 B68 1935; microfilm: F572.L5 G7 1933a
and in the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Library- book: 74l5 929.3 D2Lg; also on microfilm

  • See the Lenawee County Family Researchers (a genealogy society) web site, for their publications 'for sale' that include a series on Lenawee County Cemeteries.

The two Michigan Cemetery books described above can be found in many local libraries in their reference section (usually with the Locations).
