Name: County Poor House Cemetery or, an alternative site: County Poor House Cemetery
Location: Built in 1876 on Cadmus Road, in Madison Township, near where the Lenawee Airport now is, in 1998. Many of the inmates who lived and died at the poor house were buried in a little cemetery on the grounds.

Desc: The building is gone today, but the cemetery remains. There are approximately 20 headstones left.

This list was not published by Harriet Cole Clark Bowen in the 1930's and 40's when she compiled 5 volumes of cemetery books with the assistance of the DAR.

There was a Lupton headstone which surfaced when a tractor plowed it up in 1995-1996. The headstone is now on display at the Lenawee Co Historical Museum in Adrian.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER IN OHIO

If you can't find your ancestor in any of the above cemeteries and they lived in the southern portion of Lenawee County, check in Ohio. Remember there is a six-mile tract of land that was once considered part of Michigan but became part of Ohio after the Michigan/Ohio dispute. Congress settled the dispute and gave that six-mile area to the state of Ohio. These are some of the cemeteries within that strip of land that may contain Lenawee County residence.

This book lists each burial site by township within a county. In addition, it lists any published tombstone readings that have been done for the burial site giving the year the cemetery was read and if the source is a book or microfilm. The tombstone readings documents are at the Library of Michigan. This book also notes the locations of the burial sites. Many of the burial sites listed in this book are no longer cemeteries and are on private property. They may no longer be accessible.
