Harvillah Cooley was born in Knox County, Ohio in 1831. He married Margaret. They had two children, Sarah, born 1855, in Michigan, and died August 23, 1872, and E. Burr, born 1858 in Illinois, and died March 18, 1876.

Harvillah was a Civil War veteran. The roster of Co. C, 96^th Illinois Infantry lists—

Sergeant Harvillah Cooley age 31, born in Ohio, farmer; enlisted from Antioch; had previously served four months as sergeant in Company F, 37^th Illinois Regiment; appointed Sergeant at organization of company, and also Hospital Steward; was discharged December 31, 1862 for disability. He died at Lamont, Michigan, September 6, 1876, age 45 years, 1 month and 24 days, from consumption, resulting from his army service, as his physicians asserted.

The Co. F, 37^th Illinois Infantry muster roll lists Sgt. Harvillah Cooley, 31, 6’ 3", dark hair, gray eyes and a dark complexion, married, farmer, born Knox County, Ohio, residence Antioch, Lake County IL, mustered September, 18, 1861 from Chicago.

Margaret died October 13, 1873, age 41 years, 10 months, 21 days.
Sarah Cooley died August 23, 1872, age 17 years, 3 months, 20 days.
E. Burr Cooley died May 18, 1876,  age 18 years, 1 month, 4 day.
