Death of Capt. M. Boomsluiter.

Capt. Marine Boomsluiter, or George Boomsluiter as he was better known, who died at his home in this city early Sunday morning, was well known in many of the ports of Lake Michigan.

He was born in the Netherlands in 1834 and has sailed on the great lakes since 1848. For fifteen years, during the balcyon lumber days, he was on Capt. Kirby’s vessels. For the last ten years he has been in the coasting trade, the little schooner Condor being his last command.

Among the vessels which Capt. Boomsluiter commanded were the City of Grand Haven, City of Erie, Mason, Robt. Knapp, Blue Wave and the Condor. The last five were his property.

Capt. Boomsluiter was on the lake that wild night the Alpena foundered and has often averred he saw her lights, but a short time before she went under. The captain was also on a schooner that sailed out of Chicago, but a short time before the fated H. C. Akeley and was in the same storm.

The Captain leaves to mourn his death a wife and five children: Mrs. O.C. Fenlason of Tacoma, Washington; Miss Barbara, Marinus, George and Walter.

The date of funeral has not yet been fully decided upon.

Capt. Boomsluiter besides being an old lake man was 30 years a resident of Grand Haven.
