John J. Danhof, Sr.
The funeral of that old resident and good citizen, John J. Danhof, Sr., occurred this afternoon. It was very largely attended, many of the old citizens of the town besides church members being present. At 1:30 services were held from Mr. Danhof’s late home, corner Seventh and Washington streets, conducted by Rev,. Lamar. Services from the Second Reformed church, of which Mr. Danhof had been a member for a number of years, began at 2 o’clock. Rev. C. M. Steffens, who was a great favorite of Mr. Danhof’s and who came here from Rochester, N.Y., preached in English and Rev. DeBruyn in Holland. Rev. Lewis also spoke briefly. The floral offerings were very beautiful. Mr. Danhof’s remains were enclosed in a fine casket upon the plate of which was inscribed "John J. Danhof, born at Warffum, Province Groningen, Netherlands, December 31, 1827. Died in Grand Haven, Michigan, September 30, 1895." Resting on the casket was one particularly fine floral figure inscribed on which was the word, "Victory." Hon. T. W. Ferry, S. O. Eames, A. J. Emlaw, John Stark, and C. E. Wyman acted as honorary pall bearers and Sherman H. Boyce, A. G. VandenBerg, A. Poel, L. J. Mulder, H. Jonker and J. LeFebre as active pall bearers. A long procession of carriages followed the remains to the last resting place in beautiful Lake Forest.
